Rostislav S. Karpov, M.D., Ph.D., Professor, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Supervisor of Tomsk NRMC, Scientific Supervisor of Cardiology Research Institute, Head of the Internal Medicine Department at the Siberian State Medical University of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation.

In 1960, Rostislav S. Karpov graduated with honors from the Faculty of General Medicine of Tomsk Medical Institute. Under supervision of Professor Dmitry D. Yablokov who was a Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Rostislav S. Karpov worked his way from a resident physician to a head of the department (1979). He was an originator and the first dean of the Continuous Medical Education Faculty at the Tomsk Medical Institute. In 1966, he defended doctoral thesis titled “Comparative diagnostic value of some immunological and biochemical tests in identifying the rheumatic process activity in patients with valvular heart diseases” for an academic degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 1974, he defended doctoral thesis titled “Clinical and immunological characteristics of recurrent rheumatism in adults” for an academic degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 1980, Rostislav S. Karpov was assigned as a Deputy Director for Research of the Siberian Branch of the All-Union Cardiology Research Center of the the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. From that time through all following years, he has held a position of a Head of the Department of Atherosclerosis and Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease. In 1978, he was awarded an academic rank of a Full Professor at the Internal Medicine Department. In 1980, he was elected as a Corresponding Member and, in 1982, as a Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (later on the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences). From 1986 to June 30, 2015, he had been a Director of Cardiology Research Institute, a Chairman of the Presidium of the Tomsk Science Center. From July, 2016, Rostislav S. Karpov has been Scientific Supervisor of Cardiology Research Institute and the entire Tomsk NRMC.

Research Interests

Rostislav S. Karpov is author of over 900 scientific works including 415 national and international articles, 28 monographs, and 10 chapters in monographs (including two chapters in “Guidelines for Internal Diseases” addressing fundamental issues of clinical medicine). He holds 43 patents and certificates of inventions. Under supervision of Rostislav S. Karpov, 42 dissertations for a degree of Doctor of Sciences and 81 dissertations for a degree of Candidate of Sciences (equivalent of Ph.D.) have been defended.

Scientific works of the Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Rostislav S. Karpov are focusing on the most complex challenges of modern medicine. Main areas of his research comprise rheumatology, cardiology, clinical pharmacology, and clinical epidemiology. In the field of rheumatology, he gave clinical-and-pathogenetic characteristics of the variants of the rheumatism course in adults. Based on this, the system of immunological and biochemical markers of rheumatic process activity was developed. Inter-clinical immunological laboratory was organized. As a result of this work, two books and two composite volumes titled “Questions in Rheumatology” and “Diagnostics and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and related syndromes” were published.

Primary research interests of Rostislav S. Karpov comprise the development of the methods for prevention, early diagnostics, and treatment of ischemic heart disease and arterial hypertension. Great attention is given to the problem of comorbidity (combination of ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatic arthritis) and the development and clinical implementation of cutting-edge ultrasound technologies in cardiology. Improvement of organizational forms of medical care in Siberia has been of high priority. Indeed, he initiated the first-beyond-Ural Cardiology Center, mobile system of delivering medical care for cardiac patients from the sparsely populated areas based on motorship “Cardiologist”, Branch of Cardiology Research Institute in Tyumen (Tyumen Cardiology Center), Center of Child's Heart, Siberian Federal Arrhythmology Center, and information-and-education project titled “Healthy Heart”.

In the field of Cardiology, primary attention is given to the problem of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease, in particular, to immune pathology and instrumental diagnostics. Criteria of detection of latent forms of dyslipoproteinemia were elaborated. Approaches to early diagnostics of coronary artery disease were improved. The associations between Т174М polymorphism of angiotensin gene and parameters of lipid spectrum in patients with essential hypertension and coronary artery disease are found.

A significant part of scientific and organizational work of Rostislav S. Karpov belongs to the implementation of new technologies for diagnostics and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in Siberian region. Indeed, the network of arrhythmology centers, largely equipped with diagnostic and treatment devices developed together with TOO ‘Electropuls’, has been established. New approach to delivery of specialized medical help to residents of sparsely populated areas of Siberia was justified and implemented based on mobile (motorship, autobus, and rail bus) automated consulting-and-diagnostic complexes.

Karpov is a Member of the European and International Societies of Cardiologists, Member of the Medical Division Office of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Member of the Bulgarian Society of Cardiology, and Chairman of the Cardiology Task Group of interdepartmental Senatus Academicus N 53 of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
