The department was opened in 1987 by Full Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Professor V. V. Pekarsky who, for his entire career, had been dreaming about establishing major cardiac surgery in Tomsk. Since 1994, the department has been headed by Professor V. M. Shipulin.
The team comprises 225 members including nine doctors of medical sciences, three professors, 17 candidates of medical sciences, and 15 high level certificate physicians. Employees of the department defended 14 dissertations for degree of doctor of medical sciences and over 40 dissertations for degree of candidate of medical sciences. Over 300 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, over 30 articles in international journals, and 27 books have been published including six books published abroad. Nearly 80 patents of inventions of the Russian Federation were received.
Main areas of scientific research
The development of the complex of state-of-the-art high-tech methods for surgical treatment of coronary artery disease and its complications including ischemic cardiomyopathy and severe heart failure. The study of prognostic markers for outcomes of these conditions. The development of the technology of surgical interventions replacing gold standard: heart and lung transplantation.
The high efficacy of the developed diagnostic and surgical technologies for successful treatment of patients who were considered incurable before.
Special attention is given to the development and improvement of surgical help to children with congenital heart diseases. Together with Tomsk Perinatal Center, the concept of surgical treatment of newborn babies with low weight and complex congenital heart diseases (single ventricle, pulmonary atresia, and right and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction) has been developed successfully. For years, the Department of Pediatric Cardiology has been successfully collaborating with American Medical Charity ‘Heart to Heart’ International Children’s Alliance.
Based on the achievements, the work of pediatric cardiac surgeons has been recognized par excellence in Russia. The methods for treatment of patients with acquired heart diseases and coronary artery disease concurrent with heart rhythm disorders have been continuously improved. In the department, whole range of state-of-the-art approaches to treatment of these pathologies including standard and minimally invasive interventions is currently available.
The development of cardiac surgery is impossible without improvement of anesthesiology support. Modern types of anesthesia and the methods of postoperative treatment have been developed and implemented.
Practical activities
The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery has at its disposal five operating rooms and four intensive care units with state-of-the-art equipment.
Planned activity comprises all kinds of cardiac surgery interventions in coronary artery disease and its complications, acquired and congenital heart diseases, and pathologies of thoracic and abdominal aorta and its branches including brachiocephalic arteries. Annually, over 1000 surgeries on open heart and blood vessels are performed.
